How to stop deer from eating certain plants?

Well, don't replant what you now know is a deer 'treat'. Instead, look for fuzzy leafed plants like verbena or lantana. But before deciding, walk your property and neighboring properties and see what plants are thriving and plant those.

Unfortunately the perimeter of my entire yard is covered with both the Hosta & Day Lilly plantings. I don't want to pull them up because a deceased friend gave them to me years ago and they are sentimental plantings. I will, however, shop for the verbena or lantana you recommend. Thank you. Arline

deer hate mint plants and avoid areas where it is growing, however it must be planted at intervals in containers....it is invasive and will take over your entire yard if not contained....also periodically sprinkle cayenne pepper flakes on the beds,or get two big dogs like my 2 dogue de bordeaux (think the movie turner and hooch) and an invisible fence (buried underground and shocks the dog collar if they try to cross it)

Thanks for the tip about using cayenne pepper. I can get a very large container of it for $1 at the Dollar Tree store. Only problem is when it rains (and it's pouring here right now in N.J.) I'd have to re-sprinkle. Guess I'll get a few containers of the pepper :). Dogs would be a great idea along with the fence - but I'm too old and lazy to walk them . . . and our property is too small to let them run in the yard. I appreciate your excellent ideas.

Buy some bars of Irish Spring bath soap. Grate them using your vegetable grater. Put the shavings anyplace you want to get rid of the deer. We've done this for several years and it works! The deer in our area are not afraid of humans because so many people around here feed them so hair clippings from the barber/beauty shop don't repel them. Of all the things we've tried Irish Spring is the only thing that works for us.

Plant a bunch of Marigolds too!!! Or put a big fence up. I garden in a community garden in town and we finally had to put up a 8' fence to keep the deer out. They walk all over behind the fence and right under my window, 7-8 at a time.
