Concrete Overlay for the Bar...

If it's not clear by my previous posts...I have limited money and tools so creative problem solving has become my wheelhouse when it comes to the outdated sections of my home. See below for another DIY on a dime...
Before pic...I removed any pieces of linoleum that were not secure and sanded the linoleum.
I used Ardex feather finish..

This part of the process will truly test your patience and faith in a higher power!!!

Mix small batches so that you have time to spread and apply before it sets up.

If you have vertical surfaces do them separately, and add less water so that it is less likely to drip.

***Do not use a large tool for spreading...a large tool is hard to control with even pressure and will create gouges.

After drying, sand with a 100 or 150 grit to remove any raised bumps.

***Do not over sand since you are applying such a thin layer of feather finish.

Wipe any dust and repeat process...I did 5 or 6 layers of feather finish and sanding between each layer...gradually moved to a fine grit sand paper to polish for a smooth surface.

Once I was happy with the appearance, I sealed with two coats of this.
Here you go...final pics
The one thing that I didn't do and should have...looking back thru hazy glasses...seal the room if you can (to contain the dust bowl you are about to unleash)

  • Ardex feather finish

Are you able to perhaps select a different color for the counter?

So many of the diy faux concrete projects I've seen have straight lines going through them where the people have applied the layers of concrete. Yours looks kind of swirly and natural. Any tips on how you achieved that look as opposed to the straight lines? Beautiful job!

Very Nice. You recommend not using a large tool. What size and type of tools did you use to mix, apply and sand? Any other tools you would specifically recommend?
