Soak a steel wool pad in a bowl of vinegar and you will have a nice antiquing stain after a few days. You could also whitewash the wood by mixing a small amount of white paint into water and putting the mixture on with a rag if you are looking for a lighter tone. Also, some of the newer dark waxes used in furniture refinishing may work for you.

Distressing it is one way. Using heavy chains to hit and dent the wood. or the crackling paint makes wood look old too. Of course you can always stain wood and purchase embellishments to look like fancy old wood. Good luck!

You can darken wood by placing it in a container of ammonia. The wood must not contact the ammonia, only 'bathed' in the vapors. It can take a few hours, keep an eye on it until it's the darkness you like.
