How can I get rid of the sand spurs in my yard?

i have tried for 6 years to get rid of the sand spurs in my very large yard in central Florid. No luck. Please help! My grandchildren cannot go in my yard to play when they come to visit and it is very frustratin. Any help you can give me would most appreciated. THanks, Elsie

    It's challenging to deal with sand spurs after they develop. You should use a pre-emergent in early spring (there is corn gluten meal if you are going an organic route), and keep your grass as healthy as possible, as this will help crowd out sand spurs. Do not use a fertilizer too high in nitrogen, as it can encourage sand spur growth.

    We had them in our barnyard in the cleared area just before the barn - as soon as I saw those little &*(* showing their very tiniest leaves - I pulled them up, put them in a pile - let them dry and burned them. In 2 seasons, I had them ALL gone. I got where I could see the tiniest one in a bunch of grass at 50 feet LOL. Wasn't about to spray anything since the horses, dogs, cats, whatever were out there all the time.
