When a Dogwood gets a fungus should it be killed?

We have cut off the dead limbs and only about a third of the tree is left but it is covered in a greenish fungus. I want to plant a new tree but worry it will just get the same fungus. Several other homes have Dogwoods and I wonder if I am putting their trees at risk.

It can be treated depending on how long it has been diseased for.Do you want to save the tree or try to?

During the 4 years we have owned it we have trimmed the dead and hoped it would recover but it is a fraction of what it was . I have not been able to find any information about a cure. It seems doomed. The tree is old. My neighbor thinks at least 20 years but maybe older.
