That's most likely dust build up. It's hard for the vacuum to reach. Sweep edges with a broom and vacuum.
We have light beige carpet in some rooms and I noticed that dark shading. My carpet-laying brother-in-law said that while the loose nap in the rest of the room gets vacuumed thoroughly, the edges don't, so lots of the original loose nap is still sitting in the edges. Plus, the center gets walked on in traffic patterns, but the edges don't. We use a straw broom on the edges once a year or so, about as often as we clean the wood trim. Best wishes!
