I've painted over brick fireplaces before, but this stone is rough. The top of the hearth looks like smooth marble, but the bottom is the same rough stone.
Roll then use a paint brush, and lightly , very lightly smooth out the paint
I use the dense foam rollers from the dollar tree. I particularly like the rounded edges in case you have to paint inside the decorative moldings.
