Daylilies or Iris choke out weeds, spread nicely and bloom for several weeks. Daylilies will bloom longer and the greenery looks good all season. If you want shorter plants for shady area I would plant Lily of the valley or hosta.

Ruella, Mexican Petunia has deep roots and would do well st stop erosion. It flowers all summer into fall, and comes is purple, white or a beautiful delicate pink.
