How do I grow cauliflower so that it is white like in the store?

I am container gardening this year. I had double knee surgery 3 months ago and I still have to have home grown tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower. Though they would be the easiest to grow in a container. First time trying this.

  • Cauliflower is a cool weather crop, generally grown when the temps are in the 60's. S early fall and mid-spring but not in hot summer. As the first signs of the heads growing, farmers generally pull the leaves gently over them to keep them white. Some people use clothespins to keep the leaves closed over the heads. Good luck!
  • Wow! You are brave! I am looking at knee surgery too. Good for you, do the gardening in pots, you still get to garden, albeit a bit less but you still get to garden. You can do this, just be patient. I suggest getting the plants from a good nursey or garden center to make things easier for you this time around. Don't worry about the color of the cauliflower too much, the store bought is commercially grown with chemicals. My home grown has always been yellow to golden and yummy and most likely jam packed with nutrients.
