I can't get my amaryllis plant to bloom, just long droopy leaves?

Got the amaryllis a year ago Christmas in a boxed kit and it did show a temporary bloom but not the following Christmas. I know its dormant now, but still grows long stalks. Should they be cut back and the plant left in the dark?

Can you explain what happened or how you stored the bulb after the first year?

Thanks for your reply. I went by the directions on the box...it came with planting medium and a pot. (On sale at Home Depot). After those blooms stopped the green leaves shot up and then plopped over. (I had 2 plants). I kept them inside where there's plenty of light but not bright sunlight and watered when dry. I thought they needed special care, but I did read on line they can be planted outside here in Florida. (Its so hot though, I'm afraid they'll burn up).

For now keep them inside where you had them . between September-January plant outdoors in part sun with well drained soil.

Thanks Janet. Will take your advice. As long as there is still green on them, I have hope.

    You will be fine.

Hi there, you can cut the leaves and the flower stalk, if you have any to about 2.5 cm (1") from the top of the bulb. Water and feed the bulb after cutting and it should be fine.
