It spreads and comes back every year, the flowers are purple and then when flowers are spent they are like goatheads....thorns.... Montana

    This looks like a strain of burr. They will take over your yard and are hard to get rid of.

    Break a few stems and pour vinegar on them. Vinegar should kill it. Careful if there's other woody, viny plants nearby, vinegar will kill them too.

    I think it's best to dig it out if you get all the roots. However you decide to kill it, be sure to remove any seed heads, too, so more don't sprout up!

    I can see that it is encroaching the other plants.....yes it looks like a thistle of sorts and it is a weed. Unless of course your from Scotland and then it's a national flower.

    it sure looks like a goat head plant. Pull it up by the root in the center of the plant and discard in your haul-away garbage. The seeds will puncture any bicycle tire or get stuck on the bottom of your shoe. The horrible weed is very prevalent in Eastern Washington State. Get rid of it, off your property.
