They say light colors. Flooring should be front to back with the lines it'll give the appearance of being bigger (longer) (IE: laminate, long rectangular ceramic) I laid my 13x13 tiles to be diamond shaped because I had 2 rooms meeting at the doorway. It brought the focus to the floor, it was beautiful and looked the same in each room. I don't see many homes with it laid in that pattern. Keep clutter off counters and minimize whats on the counter such as sm appliances. Keep decorations simple the more on walls will make it look smaller too.

If you have empty wall space, mirrors can always make a room look bigger! Aim for small kitchen furniture (table and chairs) as to not take up more room than necessary.

Keeping the counters clear will open up the space. Neat and organized cabinet interiors as well. Keep the color scheme neutral with a couple of pops of color to add interest.

Let the sunshine in! Take advantage of natural light by keeping windows clear of heavy curtains (unless privacy is an issue). Even wide venetian blinds can work nicely!

If it's not an apartment paint cabinets light and as was stated lighting is crucial either window or overhead. Amazingly I wood have strong citrus color on bowls or kitchen towels I think that this draws the eye to look around maybe a soon rest as well. TJMAXX is a great place for this a well as small appliances coffee maker and toaster in a color. We tend to think,I believe, that it won't work because color is strong, shocking for some and they feel it makes room look enclosed but I find the opposite happens. It makes area cheerful and playful so size isn't noticed. If you hack an eating area within the space I would start there with placemats. I would say do the simple fixes first before hiring electrician to deal with lighting . If you can remove curtain in area do so and you can always put it back up,just leave to rods up.
