If you are talking about a spreading plant, you need to prune. Take a shovel around the base of the plant and pull outvthe roots from the shoots. A good way to manage this type of plant is to keep the plant in a pot and bury the pot keeping a 1-2 inch lip anove ground. You will need to split the plant every year or two and add nutrients to ensure optimal appearance.

Sounds like you have a climber? IF so, use a trellis & train the plant[s] to climb it & when it has reached the size you desire, prune it to keep it coned.
IF you are talking about a plant that is spreading outside the area you desire it to be in...the plant[s] should be dug out & placed into a container that will NOT ALLOW it's roots to grow beyond the limits of the container [NO HOLES in the bottom} & like what was stated [above]...keep the edge of the container the plant[s] is/are planted in ABOVE the soil level around it so that roots out growing the container do don't spread beyond the container.
