Chemistry Hacks for the Ultimate Spring Cleaning List

This is the ultimate spring cleaning list that you can use anytime of year, but perfect for spring cleaning.

What I love most about spring cleaning, is the fact that you don’t really have to spend much money or any at all. It’s all about using what you have and hacking into the chemistry of cleaning, to get the most out of it.

The Kitchen
  • The Ceiling:
Always start at the top of a room and work down. I have really tall ceilings so I use a broom to sweep the top and fixtures. Using a damp rag, wipe down the fixtures too.
  • The Walls:
With warm water and dish soap ( I always recommend Blue Dawn ®, see all the resources in the blog post), wipe down the walls and baseboards.
  • Floors:
From the Book: Clean the floors with the DIY PineSol Cleaner (it smells amazing).
If you don’t have the book, you can use warm water/dish soap to deep clean the floors.

If you don’t have the book, you can use warm water/dish soap to deep clean the floors.
Appliances:
Microwave: Use our favorite microwave cleaner (click blog post link for details)! After you use this, keep the hot vinegar lemon water to clean the dishwasher and oven area.
From the Book: Use the “Everything” cleaner from page 13 to clean the dishwasher, fridge, stove top, and any appliance. Click blog post link for details.
Coffee pot: Check out the post for the Keurig (click blog post link)and use the same method for any coffee pot!
Rugs: If you have rugs in the kitchen, this is the best freshener for them (click blog post link)
The Living Room/ Bedrooms
  • The Ceilings:
Same method as the kitchen!
  • For the Ceiling Fans:
Take a pillow case around the blades and wipe off (this keeps the dust from falling). Wipe with a damp cloth to get the rest of dust off.
  • The Walls:
Same method as kitchen.
  • Furniture:
Dust all the furniture.
From the Book: Use the Homemade Dust Cleaner! If you don’t have the book, use what you have on hand.
Cleaning the fabric on furniture:If you subscribe to the newsletter, I have mentioned a few methods for this. Depending on your fabric, you can just use warm water and a little dish soap to freshen. Or from the Book: Use the granite/stone multi-purpose cleaner on page 13 to clean pillows, regular fabric, and also suede!
  • Carpets:
Use the carpet cleaner in the blog post!
If you have wood floors, you can use your favorite cleaner.
Use this homemade air fresher to make everything smells nice (link in blog post)
  • Beds:
Sprinkle baking soda on the mattresses, allow to sit, then vacuum up. Wash pillows in the washing machine (I do two at a time to even out the weight).

Read these chemist tips on deep cleaning to check out some over looked areas in the common areas that need to be checked out as well as dryer vents, a/c units etc. (Link in blog post)

Use the all-purpose bathroom cleaner link found in the blog post.
