How do I attach a French Cleat to the back of a painting?

I have a large (78X78) picture to hang. It weighs close to 50 pounds. How would I go about using a French cleat for hanging it? I'm told that would be best for a large, heavy piece of framed art.

. cut a 2x4 to length about 1/2 inch to 1 inch shorter than the picture. cut in half on the diagonal so that on piece fits smoothly into the other. attach onto the frame of the picture and one to studs in the wall with the screws
It is hard to slice a piece of wood on the lengthwise diagonal without a table saw. You can buy them. They are pieces of aluminium with complementary angles. Home Depot has one 42 incheslong and say it will hold 300 pounds. Your biggest challenge will be getting the pieces level and hitting wall studs. Good luck.
Screw picture hooks to frame
We use French cleats on everything heavy! We get ours at Home Depot - in the picture hanging section. They come in different widths and weight capacities, and they come with a mini level. Very easy to do and works great! We hung up a 3-unit cubby in our laundry room and it's where we keep our pet food - you can imagine how heavy it gets being stocked with cans of dog food and cat food plus biscuits, etc. Never had a problem with anything hung this way. French cleats is the way to go! Good luck. :-)
i like the french cleats...the instructions are right on the package and they go by size and weight ..i think you will be very happy with them....Lowe's carries them as well as any hardware store
