How to sharpen lawn mower blade?

I was told not to turn your lawnmower on its side, fore, small particles can get in the lines. So, how do you get the blade off to sharpen? I guess I have 2 questions?

I turn my mower on its side to remove the blade Opposite the gas tank. Make sure you unplug the spark plug for safety sake.
You can use the jack from your car, or car ramps to lift the mower enough to get underneath it. Turning it over isn't a good idea, trust me! I learned the hard way!
