Question about painting kitchen countertop

I recently refinished my kitchen cabinets and now want to paint and transform my white laminate countertops to a darker color. For those who have undertaken the project of painting their countertops, could you tell me if once redone are they prone to showing water spots? My husband is like a tornado around water who never seems to notice he's left behind puddles. In my bathroom I made a wood countertop that I stained and polyurethaned which turned out gorgeous. However, if I don't wipe up all the little water splashes, it causes water spots. If left too long, the water spots do not come up. I purchased the Giani system for my kitchen because of it's good reviews, but since I'm having the water spot situation on my vanity top, I'm reluctant to paint my kitchen countertops. Anyone had this problem?

Rustoleum makes a countertop paint, as well as, a refinisher kit that makes countertops look like the stone countertops. They are beautiful.

I'm not sure if you wish to have granite like countertops but you can fake granite! Just search fake granite on Hometalk! I have also seen Michelle (creator of Unicorn SPiT turn laminate countertops into fake polished stone countertops and it was awesome! Here is the link to the tutorial she did on Hometalk's Facebook on Nov 17, 2016:

I just redid my counters with Gianni. It turned out amazing! For the first couple of weeks you have to make sure you clean up water immediately. However if you don't, just leave it to completely dry on its own and the counter will look like new within 6 hours. I've had no problems with water spots, even with 6 kids! Hope this helps!

Tami - your answer is what I was hoping to hear. Looks like I'll be refinishing the counters after all. Thank you for the input.

I used Mineral Select from Daich Coatings in Onyx Fog and am very pleased with the finished product. It was super easy to apply and the finish is hard and has held up beautifully. No problems with water spots.

I used Giani to give my ugly green ceramic tile new life. I used the granite system and love the results. I did my 6 months ago and haven't had any issues. People think I replaced my tile.
