I'm not sure there are any hard and fast rules on choosing the size of a porch light. I would choose a light that compliments the style of your home, and go for longer rather than wider, unless you have several feet of wall where you want the light, then try to find one that balances the space. You might want to drive around your town to look and see what size you like the look of. If you have a local lighting store consult with them.
As Shirley stated there are no rules, and you are lucky to have such grand doors. I would also say that the style of the light should compliment the style of your home. I like my finishes to match, as in the door hardware should coordinate with the lighting fixture. I also like dusk to dawn lighting and automatically brightens when the motion detector detects someone on the walkway to the front door aka motion lights.
