Gardenias are in most cases frost proof and not actually an evergreen but are considered one. The shedding of leaves results from a natural process which is associated with replenishing and promoting new growth with the end result being new leaves and flowers. If the plant in the picture is actually yours,it has no mulch one side and may be starving for moisture. Don't pull the yellow leaves.Cut them off carefully with scissors or a small pruner.

    That's natural.

I had the same problem - gave mine a dose of iron and the change was dramatic.

I agree, a dose of iron should solve the problem. I like to place rusty nails in the soil around my gardenias for the long term.
