How do you keep squirrels out of a garden and flowerbeds?

Howdy! You can try putting bamboo skewers through out your pots sticking up so the pointy end is up ... I buy them at the dollar store 100 for a buck. Also you can try red pepper flakes. Good Luck! :)

Lynnea, I love your pic of a squirrel, it is cute!! your ANSWER - is simple!! Plant Mary Golds, and this darling animals HATES THEM, for they STINK, and makes more blooms. If you have a flower bed, then have several planters with more Mary Golds in it. This works wonders, believe me, for I have used it several yrs now, since I have discovered this. With this plant, you can SAVE the blossoms after blooming, and use these seeds, for next yr. Over and over again. This is great, all because of the SMELL and the BLOOMS. My first thought is always a big dog. But my sister (who lives near Yosemite, the squirrel capital of California) says her cats seem to keep them away...They eat everything at my house, too, especially my sweet potato vine. I am going to try marigolds this year.

If you mix a spray bottle with water and chili powder and spray it on the things you don't want eaten, they will leave it alone. You can even put red pepper flakes in your birdseed. Squirrels don't like the heat and birds cannot taste it. It isn't toxic, just be sure to wash fruits and veggies you bring in for your own consumption.

A friend of mine used a small bottle of tabasco sauce to a gallon of water and sprayed. They left her plants alone. She also used the stakes idea.

Squirrels were digging in my potted plants and ruining them. I sprinkled cayenne pepper in the pots and it worked!

We offer our squirrels their own little treat stand. We mounted a piece of wood to the top of our fence and every day we put sunflower seeds or similar out for them. They come down the tree, go straight to the treats, and leave all of our plants alone.

I know how this will sound but the only way I can get them to stay away from my feeders and garden is to have a squirrel feeder or two as far away as I can put them, I stock it with dried corn, they love it and leave all the other edibles alone!!!

I used habenaro pepper flakes. My husband grows them and dries them up. The "cute" squirrel dug up my tulip bulbs almost as fast as I planted them. I sprinkled it all around where I planted and have never lost another plant. I almost felt sorry for the little thing because as he dug up the bulb and put his little hands in his mouth he got a good taste of the hotness. I did toss him a piece of bread to counteract the hot. You can also use dried chilli peppers but it has to be put on more often and if it rains. With habenaro or scotch bonnet flakes, once is all it takes. Good luck. Sharon

I put out a few squirrel feeders with a variety of foods for them. When its easy pickings, they are less likely to bother my garden!
