What is the best way to paint over terracotta kitchen floor tile?

My kitchen floor tile is old, tired, terracotta tiles. I have replaced damaged tiles, but am ready for a color update on existing tiles. As the kitchen is the busiest room, any paint or stain will need to be durable, very low odor,(pets and aquariums) and fast drying. I have researched the project, but would greatly appreciate any ideas or tips from any of you DIYers who have already tackled a similar problem! Many thanks.
