Have a garage sale!!!! Make a little money to buy a new shelving system so that when you de-clutter everything you can organize right away.

Like I do any de-cluttering projects. Tackle the area little by little. Don't attempt to do it one day or you will end up with half the stuff somewhere else in your house. take a 3x3 spot, go through everything in that spot and determine what can be sold, donated or needs to be organized somewhere else or back in the garage once complete. Go slowly and at a good pace so you don't over extend yourself and end up scrapping the project. I know its easier said then done but once you start seeing results you will want to continue and finish it.

Go through garage and purge. Then put up some shelves and hooks on cieling and store thing up instead of on floor. Put up a peg board and organize.

If you haven't used an item withing the past year, toss it; unless of course it's a large maintenance item, like a lawn mower or something.

Sort into piles: KEEP (only if you're going to use it within the next year), TOSS (broken items or garbage), and DONATE/SELL (if you don't want to be bothered with a garage sale, then donate the usable items to a local charity). Then yes to previous poster - use peg boards, make use of the ceiling, group like items together, label containers, create zones, etc. Good luck! :-)

Lots of great ideas so far! If you have trouble deciding what to toss and what to keep, call a friend to come over to help you through the decision process.

You can put shelves all around and put all you need on it and donate all you dont need and dont use

I am doing this now. I am going through boxes and making piles of keep, trash, and donate. I have been very strick! Anything we haven't used in years goes into either the donate or trash. I also have plans on adding peg board to the sides of the garage to hang tools. My husband can't help me because he is a bigger hoarder then I am. I also gave my children a week to reclaim their stuff. This is day three and I hope to be finished by the weekend so I can start on the peg board.
