Hi Marta! I'm thinking that perhaps you need to paint the paneling white first and then go over it with the gray wash. Can you send a picture?

Clean and sand the paneling and do a primer coat in black, dark gray, or white. OR skip the sanding and primer coat and go straight for a coat of chalk paint in one of those colors. You shouldn't need two coats, but with yellow orange to cover, you might need to in places. Once the primer or chalk paint has completely dried, follow up with your gray wash, which should be a thinner coat of medium gray, light gray, or white, and which can also be a chalk paint. Now this assumes that you will get rid of the paneling on your next makeover, so you don't need to preserve the paneling. Best wishes 😇

Paint and primer in one Lowe's or home depot should only take one coat.

Is it that the paneling has been painted or is it shellac or varnish that has aged to that color of yellow-orange? I have heavy knotty pine that have aged to that color from either shellac or varnish.
