I replaced stairs , and stained them they came out way too dark!

Is there anything I can do to them so they will not be to dark?

You could try sanding them back and then applying a lighter stain. Good luck!

What you probably have to do it sand them back down to bare wood and start over. Cut your stain next time around, and make samples before you stain the doors. You can try a lacquer thinner before you sand to see if that will help lighten the stain.

Read the can of the product that you used and find out what the solvent is (vehicular base) and use that to wipe down and remove some of the stain. As a last step you may need to do some light sanding. Start with an out of the way place to do your experimenting or on a separate board sample. Lots of luck.

You could always dry brush a chalk paint over the top. This will give them more of a distressed look. When you're happy with the way they look apply a good coat of wax.
