The best path for a French drain is into the neighbors lawn and out to the street. They aren't willing to allow us to do that. And that built a retaining wall to keep water from flowing into their yard. Thus the problem!!

This might seem simplistic but I would take a very sharp wooden or metal pike and make holes in the ground where they water pools. It might be there is a mass of roots that are keeping the yard from allowing the water to drain properly.

A dry creek bed can be a nice focal point and draw the water away. I just installed one fairly easy. Research it and see if it's something you're willing to install

We had a similar problem. I planted two willow trees. These are very thirsty trees and really helped to manage the water. Good luck.

You could build up that area by hauling in dirt to divert the water along the wall out into the street.

I have seen Rain Gardens planted in water problem areas.

  • Great remedies here. Is there no way to build a french drain on your own propety? I get that the neighbors are not thrilled about water intrusion, it keeps lots of attorneys in my state employed. I would plant trees, build a retaining wall, whatever you need to do to soak up the excess water.

In addition to the dry creek bed suggestion check out rain gardens. Also check out the 'law of water' to see if you have some legal rights to have the retainer dam dismantled. Dry creek beds can be an aesthetic addition to the landscape and the neighbor could continue the effect through his property. Also check with your county extension office to see if they any suggestions and if you might qualify for financial aid.
