Sun's causing damage to my paint

Danny McSweeney
by Danny McSweeney
My house sits at the end of the street where the sun hits directly it for hours. It causes the paint to dry out and peel, bubble and fade. I've tried different paints, primers, etc without success. Is there any paint or system that could help me to take care of this problem.

Perhaps you are using the wrong paint. What paint have you used?

ElastomeriCoat is a paint that has rubber in it that allows for expansion and contraction. It's what our painter suggests for wood trim. I would see if you can find something like that (or the same product) and make sure that there isn't any flaking paint. This should really help and last a lot longer.

If you can plant tall shrubs or trees on that side, they will eventually help. Awnings at the end of the house aren't rare, and they could possibly help a lot. Try to find out what paint is used in Arizona and see if that's appropriate for your house. Best wishes 😇

  • My best guess it may be the wrong paint. Not to knock big box improvement stores, but sometimes their paint isn't the best. You get what you pay for. Cheap paint = problems. The elements are so damaging, especially the sun. Visit a proper paint store, Sherwin Williams, Dunn Edwards and discuss with the consultants. I will bet my last fake copper clad tarnished red cent that you will get the help you need and a good quality product. Ano no, I do not work for them, just purchase their products.

Be sure to close the drapes until about 4:30-5:00, then the heat of the day is over. You will keep your home cooler, and save air, besides. Regarding the paint, I would have to see the paint and the date, that you got this, to tell you if it was too old. We must keep it stirred when using, as well. Best wishes, Judy.

  • Just saw a Benjamin Moore paint commercial for just this issue. Might be something to look into. Thought I would pass info along.

I have a back door that has sun all day on it and I used Rustoleum Marine Epoxy paint and its still looking good. But I also like the idea of the elastomeric rubber paint too. Another option if you don't have an overhang over the front door you may want to add one of those polycarbonate awnings that screens UV light.... https://www.amazon.com/s?k=door+awning&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

You can also talk to someone in the paint department of you local hardware store. They should know the best kind of paint for your situation.
