Hi Carol, when you use chalk paint, you need to seal it. Annie Sloan's paint line comes with a dark and a light wax. The dark wax is a beautiful way to antique your cupboards. Both your cabinets and backsplash will need to cure once waxed. I used a chalk paint finish for a lot of my cottage furniture and rather than a wax finish, I applied a spray varnish afterwards. That way, I can easily wipe up any messes that my boys make. You can create your own chalk paint - there's loads of recipes out there. Just note that with a wax finish, you're going to have to re-apply it ( the recommendations will be listed on whatever product you go with). With a spray sealer or sealer you apply with a brush, the advantage is you'll be done after the 2 or 3 recommended coats. Hope this helps in your decision process.
