What is the best type of mulch to use in flower beds?

Depends on your area. I like using cypress mulch because it doesn't float when it rains. I also love the natural brown color because it contrasts nicely with my plants. It is easy to spread and helps to keep weeds down as well.

Generally it is a matter of personal preference. Black mulch has been popular but in my area it is much to hot as it is and it would just fry my plants. Some people use rocks or pebbles. Others use straw. I use bark prroducts as that is what is best for my climate and beds.

Use what appeals to you, is good for your plants, goes with the feel and style of your home.

We have a small utility trailer and we purchase our mulch in bulk. It's much more cost effective. Some merchants even deliver to your house. Last year, it cost $45 to fill our trailer. You get more bang for your buck. I prefer the black as it blends in with the soil. It's great for water retention too. Google or Bing some sources in your area.

I use Scott's earth grow. I also lay down newspapers really thick layers, spray them down with water and then throw on the mulch. Keeps the weeds out and eventually disintegrates.
