Love farmhouse style? Love rustic? Love country? Love primtive? This is for YOU!
Grab the object you want to give an old look to! I'm creating a small sign here, so I found a blank plank in the craft section for $2.

Paint it a base color. This will be the color that will show when the crackling is complete. I tend to steer towards dark colors like blacks and browns. It will makes those cracks pop and show up! You can spray it on from a can or brush it on. Your choice. Just get a paint that will stick well to your object.

Let this layer dry.
Here's the really secret ingredient: plain o' white Elmer's glue. Or any white school glue for that matter! Dollar stores rock to find cheap white glue!
I pour mine out in a container and dip a brush in to apply it to my sign. Get ready to apply the next layer right after while your glue is still tacky!
Next up is my contrasting top color. Here I'm using an off white color from Junk Monkey Paint. So priming, prepping or sanding needed with this paint, so it's a great choice.
Plus, I want this to look old, so a chalk-type paint works perfect. It dries flat and matte looking! Bonus!
Now the magic happens as everything dries...and pulls apart and crackles! You get a beautiful distressed effect!
TIP: I use a hairdryer to help speed up the process. (Yes, I'm impatient!) Do a low heat setting, too high can make it bubble!
Now I've decided at this point to add a stencil. How about a rooster! Love to collect stencils, you too?
For sealing (once everything is dry), I recommend a water based poly! Here's one of my all-time favorites by Minwax. It's a clear Polycrylic. You can also seal this paint with a wax too!
And here are the rest of all my finished "faux crackled" projects for the day....which one is your favorite? .....How about a planked love sign?
How about doing this on a piece of furniture?
Or even some decor pieces around your home like candlesticks, wooden tissue boxes, lamp bases, picture frames and soooo much more!
I'd love to see what you decide to make!

Hello, do you wait for the glue to completely dry before applying the contrast paint or put it on the wet glue.

When putting the second of paint on do you put it thicker in the middle and gradual thinning on the sides?

How thick should the layer of glue be when applying it? When applying the top coat do you want it to be a thin layer, just enough to cover the base coat?

Can you tell me what colors and brand paint you used for the planked love sign? That aqua is absolutely gorgeous and I want to paint EVERYTHING with it! Thank you
