What can I plant underneath a mature cherry blossom tree?

There are sparse pieces of grass And barely any sunlight gets through. The ground is very dry compacted. large roots are Plainly visible.

    Consider making container plantings instead with assorted annuals and perennials for shade.

    What about a nice border of your choice (rocks, wood, bricks, etc) around the tree as far as the roots appear on the grass. Then fill with a nice mulch, stones, gravel, etc to make a nice, neat area that looks polished. If you want you can put a birdbath in the area. have fun!

    I like the idea of putting something pretty, but low maintenence under the tree - a pretty ararngemeny of rocks/stones for example.
