We use Scott's fertilizer and make certain the lawn is watered. Ours always looks great!

Depending on where you live and how chemical free you want to be you can go with Scott's or a local brand or you can try this recipe from Jerry Baker: 1 cup ammonia, 1 cup Epsom salts, 1 cup mouthwash, 1/2 cup liquid dish soap and 2 cans of beer. You mix it all together and dissolve the Epsom salts. Put it in a hose end sprayer. It covers 2500 sq. ft. You'll find, since this 'tonic' works to increase root depth, that you might not have to water as much as usual. I do it in June and August in North Texas and it works great.
