Have you tried putting down cardboard under the mulch ?
  • Question? Did you put down a weed suppressant before the mulch? Cardboard, thick newspapers or landscape fabric? Then the mulch? Then cut an "x" where you want your plant giving it room to breathe and mature. That alone will help greatly. Then the weeds that do appear, and they always will, are shallow rooted and easy to pluck out.

Use boiling water or epsom salt and boiling water for weed killing. I also use vinegar, but be careful as vinegar kills anything it touches.

I agree with the cardboard suggestion. I have two different gardens...one with cardboard and one without. We NEVER have weeds in the cardboard lined bed...and the other one is constantly sprouting weeds.

Old wives saying - One years seeding is seven years weeding - so you only have two more years to go
