    Perennials? What is you location?

If you want showy flowers you should plant annuals. Some annuals will grow back in Florida even though they normally wouldn't above zone 9. Some annuals like marigolds, petunias and pentas will reseed themselves so a few plants will grow back next year in the same spot. If you want tall showy flowers get cannas. All the stores have them now. They do great in Florida and come back each year. You should definitely get a hibiscus bush, which has beautiful trumpet shaped flowers, starting in May. Other flowering plants that do well are geraniums, purslane, coriopsis, gaillardia, calla lilies and climbing vines like confederate jasmine and mandevilla. Roses have a reputation for not doing well in Florida, but I haven't found that to be the case. Lantana does really well and is native to Florida.

Wherever you live in Florida, the ground is mostly sand. Get garden soil to put into the hole and mix it around a little before you put your plant in. Water every day for about a week or two until the plant starts to "take" in its new location.
