Caladiums will add an extra punch of color. Also astilbes, irises and begonias would be pretty. You will need to seek out shade loving plants. It's all a matter of personal preference and what planting zone you are located in.
I totally agree with Elizabeth. You also need to consider the size of the area and where the new perennials will be. Taller ones to the back or sides, shorter in front. And don't forget mature size as opposed to the size you buy at the nursery!
I love fern with hosta. The delicate leaves of the fern with the big leaves of the hosta offer a great contrast. I also really like heuchera (coral bells). They come in so many different colors, and you can really play with foliage color with heuchera and hosta. Also check in to different kinds of hosta. I love the contrasts of different hostas - the curly fries hosta (more chartreuse) with a blue-green hosta, etc.
I have varigated euonymous as bushes, and growing up a fence. I have yellow/green and white green. Pachysandra perrenials smaller have the polka dot leaves. I use annuals for colour and love the ease of impatiens.
