Hi, I'm Christene from the blog Keys to Inspiration. My blog is all about helping you discover creative, simple, and affordable ways to design a home you love!

Today I want to share our latest home project - our new modern media center. In 2015 we moved into our townhome. It’s a new build home so we started with a totally clean slate. Since then, we’ve been updating the house little by little to make it more our style.

Our living room has been in a work in progress for a while. Recently we upgraded our TV to a new 65" one. When we got the TV home and onto our TV stand, it was clear that we needed a new media center.

I've always wanted a built-in look for our living room. Something that would fill the wall without being too bulky. Since the TV wall is so long, we couldn't find anything that would fit the space. Instead, we had to design our own!

You can read the full post on my blog here.
The first thing I did was go to the IKEA website. They have a cabinet system called BESTA that I've seen in stores and I absolutely love! It's totally customizable and I knew it would be perfect for our living room.
On the IKEA website, there is a BESTA virtual planner where you can create a mockup of your space and then design cabinets to fit inside that space.

I created a mockup of the wall in our living room and started adding in BESTA cabinets.
Thankfully, our wall happened to be the exact length of 5 BESTA cabinet frames. A perfect fit!

I spent some time adding in drawers, shelves, and door fronts. Finally, I came up with this design.
With my shopping list in hand - creating using the virtual planner - I was off to IKEA to buy all the pieces.

After I got home, Ben and I worked to assemble all of the pieces to create our new modern media center.
Tada! A perfect fit for the space. And also a much better fit for our new TV!

I literally looked exactly like the IKEA plans from the website.
After everything was assembled, there was only one final piece to add to complete the design - the hardware. The IKEA cabinets didn't come with hardware. It was up to us to decide what we wanted and how it would be installed.

I found {affiliate} these pretty matte black pulls that fit our style perfectly!

I absolutely love the matte finish. Not only does it look great, but it’s silky smooth and feels great! Even Ben commented that it felt “soft” and nice.
On the doors, we installed the hardware about 2.5” inches from the top. That’s about the width of the moulding on the door front.

For the drawers, we installed the hardware differently based on the size of the drawer.

The smaller top drawers got hardware in the center of the drawer. The larger lower drawers got hardware about ⅔ of the way up instead of in the middle of the drawer. This was more visually appealing on the larger drawer rather than having the bar pull exactly in the center.
Once they were installed, our Modern Media center was complete!

I love how the hardware pulls the whole thing together. It really finished the cabinets nicely and made it look a lot more custom than just a basic IKEA piece of furniture.
