    What is your location?

Clematis florida var. sieboldiana also called a Passion Flower Clematis (zone 11 to 7) or Double Clematis 'Avant-Garde' (zone 8 to 4; although I grow this in zone 9b). I've grown them in terra cotta pots for several years and cut them back in late fall. They've never failed to come back each spring. The flowers are small but profuse. (Full Disclosure: the attached pics are not from my garden but I thought would give you better images of the plants).

I only ever had success with Clematis when I put them in the ground and once established, they came back every year beautifully. They don't like their feet wet,

land they like to stretch their roots very deep.
