Then there are spring blooming bulbs which bloom before trees leaf out (daffodils, spanish bells, aconite, squill, crocus). There is a wealth of information at gardening websites, and also don't neglect looking at mail order garden websites and enter your requirement of shade plants to see what is available. Get a book on shade gardening--you will be amazed at how gorgeous shade gardens can be. I was unhappy about all my shade--then I found out how nice it is to not have to garden in the hot sun!
