I would cover it with beadboard or plywood & paint it light blue. Light blue on porch ceilings discourages wasps & hornets because, I was told, they think it is a the sky. I don't know if that is true or not, but it has always worked for me. 😊

im thinking the same as Leslie. Cover the rafters with beadboard, then paint.

I stained my wood beams and in between the beams treated each section like soffit. It gives the white beadboard look and I also put in insulation behind the vinyl soffit so it helps keep out the heat in summer and cold in winter.

S-W has a paint called "Porch Ceiling" (blue), but I like "Bluebell" better as it's a bit lighter.

  • What about fabric? you could staple it to the rafters as a temporary fix

Hello. I agree that with paint you get a lot of bang for your buck.I would probably go with white. I like the crisp clean feel you get from white. You can bring color in with fabric or flowers and plants. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I heard painting a porch ceiling light blue also keeps away the flies. At our local museum grounds there is an old home decorated in the earlier years and the ceiling on the front porch is painted light blue. It looks very pretty. On the wall is a plaque stating a blue ceiling helps keep the flies away. Do you suppose those old timers knew something that the modern folks do not know?

I painted my porch ceiling a beautiful sky blue and added a few clouds to it. It was like looking up at the sky!
