Try an "earth box" - available on line or make your own. Tomatoes use lots of water especially when setting fruit. Must have drainage but maintain moisture - place something that will soak up and hold water in bottom of pot - try a pamper or depend or newspaper. Soak good before placing dirt on top.
Yes - I've been growing them in pots for years. The best are the compact varieties - Patio tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, Romas - keep the "leggy" ones in the garden unless you can fit towers or cages in the pots too. Fertilize with commerical mixes like the one that comes in the container that looks like a tomato (Lowes, Home Depot). Add new soil between seasons to add nutrients.

As long as the pot is the correct size with drainage holes and let watered you should be fine.
