Using varnish and now has a yellow tint- how to fix this?

Sand off the varnish and use a water based polyurethane next time . That's why it yellowed .

In my experience Varnish does leave a yellowish tint. I have always used clear polyurethane and don't get that yellowing effect. Short of sanding the varnish off and redoing the bench with polyurethane, you could just use a very good outdoor paint.

Agree! Varnish does have and gives a yellow tint. Varnish is generally used on raw wood furniture to bring out the grain and give a mellow color. Three coats of a water based poly will do the trick. Sanding won't remove all the varnish and will affect the paint. Stripping the paint, varnish, and starting from scratch is best. Lesson learned.

consider sanding to an antique distressed finish, then spraying clear acrylic or poly on it. Sometimes that weathered look can look great as long as its done neatly.

This is water based poly! The paint is a cream color, I cannot understand it...
