What are your favorite exterior house color combinations?

We are repainting our 1930s era house this summer and are stuck for color ideas. It is a cute little two-sory with a very steep roof pitch, a couple of gables and a sun porch. We're thinking sunny yellow with white trim. What are your thoughts?

I too have old homes that have always been white with black shutters and they look great!

  • Green is one of the 2017 colors. How about this:

Hi Ellen. We too are making plans to paint our house. I would like a light gray and white trim. I think white trim looks clean and crisp. We plan to use a sprayer for the big sections. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Our house is cream and brown with a white porch and white trim around the windows. The house across the street from us is grey with red shutters and a red porch. I never would have thought of that combination myself, but it really looks nice. If I were you, I'd look around the neighborhood and see what others have done and think about what would fit in. Does the neighborhood mostly decorate in subtle colors? Pastels? Bright colors? in most cases, it's best to blend into the neighborhood, but then to give a nice pop to the front door, to set you apart. I grew up in a light blue house with black trim, and a bright purple front door. It made our house stand out from all the houses with doors that matched the primary exterior color. But not so much that people thought our house was "weird."
