Can I use wall/door trim instead of crown molding? So much cheaper!

You can but it would lay flat against the wall butted to the ceiling. Would look a little off. Crown molding has the angle cuts to straddle the wall and ceiling to blend the two.

Crown moulding is a fortune!!
I have used baseboard with a small cove molding or quarter round at the top and it looks great. It is not crown molding, which I have in some rooms but it is a great and inexpensive substitute.
We were replacing the baseboards in our living room with deeper ones--The originals were white. We turned them upside down and affixed them to the wall at the ceiling. Then we nailed the quarter round, which we painted white, on top of the baseboard against the ceiling, creating a deeper profile against the ceiling. A little caulking finished it off. It has been up for 15 years and looks great. Since the baseboard and quarter round was all going to be thrown out it cost us virtually nothing.
