I would go for the gusto. Put drywall over the brick and use a paining kit to make the slate look like granite.

Drywall over the brick to modernize it. Use a paint kit for the slate to make it look like granite.

Lot of work involved from Gina. Framing around the fireplace for drywall. Taping, mudding, and sanding. Distance from firebox and finishing around it. Dealing with the hearth. Mantle or not. At least two weeks of work. Took me a week working 12 to 14 hours a day. But it was worth the end result.

And just continue the paint on the slate, or just do the slate only

Could put decorative tiles on slate and paint the brick white which seems to be in with professional decorators again. Reclaimed wood for mantle.

Indeed it would take a bit of time, but the result would be awesome. I did the same for my brick fireplace in another home and it made such a big difference. As a friend said, it looked like my living room lost weight!
