Lowes sells a product called AirStone, that is supposed to be pretty affordable and super easy to use, and creates a stone fireplace look for you without the mess of masonry or real stone, here is a link of someone who used it:

How to Shiplap a Fireplace or a Wall
paint it to look like marble. the how to are on pinterest. basically, you paint on one color. after its dry paint on the second color using a feather. then high gloss sealer, or spray.
We tiled ours.
There's hundreds of possibilities for this. Get some masking tape, stencils & small cans of paint. Prime it first. Let dry completely. Place your stencil down & tape it into place with very small pieces of tape. With cotton balls, paint in the color. Gently lift the stencil up & move it over & repeat. You may have to cut the stencil to fit the upright portions of your fireplace frame. Let dry completely. If you don't like it when finished. Simply prime it & repeat with a different pattern (pics below). OR you could buy about 10 stencils of the exact same design & glue them together creating depth to your pattern. Use joint compound (for Sheetrock) & place your stencil down, tape it in place & fill with the joint compound & level it off. Lift easily to preserve the design. Let dry completely overnight. Paint it when dry. (Pic below). GOOD LUCK! :)
Thank you ! That's wonderful!
i have the same fireplace as leigh. i never thought to stencil it. what a perfect solution!
