I have a hard time throwing things away (although I'm not a hoarder), but after realizing I had so many scraps left over I decided to make a quilt by cutting the scraps into swatch blocks, sewing alternating rows of color, then sandwiching an old blanket between the swatches and a white sheet and then knotting the blanket with black yarn and finishing the edges off with satin blanket tape and there you go. The can take as long as you want or as quick. It took me a little while to complete in between life as I worked on this as a hobby. If I worked only on this blanket, I believe it may have taken two weeks at the most. I made a nice gift for my mom who was very happy and proud.
1. Cut whatever size squares you like...I believe these were 5x5
2. Get an old blanket which will dictate the row of swatches needed
3. Get a solid color sheet as the flip side of the quilt
After sewing your swatches in columns or rows, assemble them over the blanket arranging them into a colorful display and not repeating colors next to each other. I hung the quilt and blanket on top of each other to make sure the swatch part was as big if not bigger than the blanket and pinned them together. (I tried using a spray glue to try to hold layers in place, but it got too messy and sticky on the needle, so I found hanging, adjusting and pinning it that way was best).
I added the sheet as the final backing, repinned all layers and sewed three edges together. I left the bottom edge open to make adjustments such as cutting or serging excess off if necessary. At this point I knotted both sides together while the blanket was still hanging, every two swatch blocks apart which develops this pretty pattern. Finally, sew the bottom edge and follow with the blanket hem tape along all four sides.
This is the final result, a pretty, warm, colorful and classy blanket to enjoy for years to come!

I haven't had much sewing experience, but always wanted to get more into it... maybe now's the time!
