How can I open up the small living room in my new home?

I am moving from a 3 story home into a 1 level (with a basement) and the living room is very small. How can I open it up? I was going to wall paper, is that a good idea?

To be honest keeping the room a light color would be better than putting up wall paper.Use light colored accessories and have a mirror and a lot of soft lighting.

Definitely go with light colors...Paint the ceiling a brighter white to draw the eye upward...or even a very pale blue to mimic the sky and give a feeling of openness. Lots of mirrors to reflect light....no heavy drapes or curtains....
You could know out the wall between that room and the next if the kitchen or dinning room is on the other side. If not then using light colors will make the room appear larger.
