If you use chalk paint, you don't really have any prep work. It is designed to adhere to just about anything. Just clean your piece very well, maybe an optional light sanding, and paint. Then protect it with a polyurethane, or a wax.

Use acrylic latex paint. Lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
