Does anyone have a fool proof way to get rid of Black Carpenter Ants?

We have had a very rainy spring and it has brought back the Black Carpenter Ants. We found a few nests in our house several years ago during a remodel, and had the whole house treated. We had been ant free since then until this spring. It has rained at least 4 or 5 days a week since April and we believe the rain in forcing the ants to seek dry wood for consumption. I am looking for a way to keep them out permanently. Since the extermination period we now have pets and grandchildren playing on the floors in our home so safe and chemical free is a big concern. Thank you for any advise!
