Turn it into a solar chandelier... hang it like you wood with flowers using the sides to hold the solar lights with a bit of greenery or something that goes with the décor (beach theme with rope and shells, etc.). You can use the string solars and wrap through or use the single lights and set into the wire frame.

I would do a coco mat liner or spanish moss and put in an assortment of succulents. But another idea would be a big gazing ball. That would look nice. You could even DIY your own using those flat marbles on a bowling ball or maybe a bunch of smaller ones.

Do you have a pool? You could roll pool towels and stand them in the basket. Stick in a bottle of sunscreen and bug spray and you're all set!

My first thought was use it for towel display as well. Or turn it upside down and hange solar light and some items from fishing line as art or windChime.

Add solid lid bottom and use as a tray to carry drinks, plates, etc to your outdoor table.

i am not very imaginative person. But I am a pretty good google searcher and can draw lots of inspiration from there. This page has a hanging basket similar to yours. What about going to the lighting store or a hardware store to get a light cover. I think you can find round ones. But do something similar to this and if you use a light fixture you could put lights in it. I kind of wish I had one on my front porch. http://decoholic.org/2012/11/23/30-outdoor-christmas-decorations/
