House colour/roof colour/front door?

Lyn
by Lyn
I live in an 800 ft. cottage. The exterior is grey (which I like) and the windows are white vinyl (colour can't be changed.) My question is what colour should my front door be, and would a dark blue roof work? Thanks for reading : ) Lyn

Real, blues, red, rusty orange, deep green. Any to your liking.

Red. The contrast will be rich.

You can do about any color you want! The door makes a statement about YOU! I think an electric yellow or even a lime green would look great. Check out door colors on small homes on Pinterest or Houzz....

Make the house yours with a color you love~

Your choice is yours. Go to a store where there is a wide selection. . with a pic of your home, in your case, I think I would use gray, or a quiet color. The front door, I would likely paint white with a gray door frame. This would look very nice. Best wishes, J.

Great idea Judy! I didn't think of taking a picture of my house to the paint store. Thanks Judy

Think long a hard about a metal roof, they don't tell you over time they leak, cost alot of money to fix, but they make color tile for roof now last for along time, get you a few samples and just imagine what each color you like, blue does sound good. Good Luck

I'm dying to pick your colors, Lyn, as I immediately envisioned a gray roof (either darker or lighter than your exterior) then paint the front door a classy rich Aubergine (Eggplant) color. It will have the classy look of black but with a nice punch of color and be compatible with your cottage. If your exterior is a light gray, then (please!!) pick a charcoal gray for the roof. It looks MUCH more classic (and classy) than a blue roof! I moved recently from a new development where a few buyers selected blue for their roof and after a year, they all regretted it as they grew tired of it very, very fast! I love blue and freely decorate with it but would never pick it for a big (costly) item that you are going to have to live with for a long time!

Hi Elaine : ) Thanks SO much for all your feedback and excellent suggestions. I wish there was a way to upload a photo of my house for you to see. Any chance you have a website? Many thanks again : )

Hi Bonnie : )Thanks so much for your help. My house is so old, so I don't think it would handle the weight of a metal roof anyway (my thinking is that a metal roof would be heaver than regular shingles-which may not be right.) The cost is also prohibitive. Really appreciate the time you took to help

Sorry, Lyn, I don't have a website. I'd love to see your house; I bet it's charming! A few minutes ago, I was looking up an idea on Hometalk and saw your response to my Comment. Usually, Hometalk sends an email when someone responds but I didn't get one this time so it was just luck that I spotted your Reply. Where in Canada are you located? I hope you are very happy with your final solution AND have a very happy 150th!! 🇨🇦

I think grey and blue would look great. As boring as this is I would do front door in white to match windows and house looks pulled together. 3 colors is what you should stick with to have it flow be cohesive. Now if you aren't a conformer then go with a bright happy color. Whatever you love since it's not a large home you could get away with a sunny yellow if you like that, even turquoise. It's just a matter of your preference. Classic look or fun look.

Someone about stated that metal roofs have issues and "leak over time and cost a lot of money to fix"... I will strongly disagree with that. I have had a metal roof for many years. absolutely no absolutely issues! We love ours! Ours was put over the original roof we had and done by a quality company that came highly recommended. I'm sure as with anything else poor installation installation could have been a factor in this persons Situation.

Now on the roof color.. I can see something a shade or two darker then your house In gray. Maybe.. that's going to be a lot of gray to live with! 😊 For us our house is white with brown trim so we chose to make our roof the same color brown as our trim. Because no one wants a white roof! Lol

As for your door you can go wild! You can make it any col you want! Also if that is going to be your "trim" color you might even think about that also being your roof color!
